Yubi key ios2/2/2024 ![]() If all that Apple doesn’t know is passcode, a lot of people use short pins which means e2e encryption is easily cracked by Apple or government. Apple might be using secret keys unique to device that even apple does not have (like randomly generated on device). I doubt a short PIN is used for e2e encryption of the keychain. There seems to be some contradiction here. Apple’s article states that this second key is obtained from information unique to the device, combined with device passcode. The Boxcryptor’s article states that this second key is just the user’s passcode. However a subset of user’s data (keychain, credit cards, etc) is additionally encrypted with information unique to device, including passcode. Apple has access to this info, thus it has the key. It seems the iCloud (sync and backup) data is encrypted with users Apple ID and password. This is possible on Linux FDE with static pass or challenge response, but I haven't found the answer for iOS. I am looking for an app that can read a secret from Yubikey using NFC/USB and enter that into passcode field, without using Authenticator Apps (which are not accessible prior to login). I know I can use Yubikey in iOS after login (for websites or apps), but the question is, can Yubikey be used to unlock an iPhone at login stage, replacing/supplementing the passcode? That's an area where Yubikey could be used. There is the option of using more than 6 digits or using alphanumerical passcodes, but long passcodes are difficult to type frequently. ![]() ![]() That's not a cryptographic key derivation function, merely a software program that can be bypassed. Apple locks the phone with few incorrect PIN tries. However, 6 digits isn't sufficient to protect against brute force attacks. This is a short PIN that you enter when you turn on the phone or sometimes instead of the Touch ID or Face Recognition. ![]() The iPhone is encrypted by default with a passcode that is now 6 digits. ![]()
